OData V4: Communication between SAPUI5 and SAP Backend
The Open Data Protocol is an open standard for the development and use of RESTful APIs. With OData V4, SAP has replaced the previous OData V2 standard and created a powerful, future-proof solution that is specially optimized for cloud and hybrid architectures. OData v4 is used in the development of RAP and CAP apps.
It relies on the consistent use of JSON as the standard format for data exchange. While OData V2 can often still be based on XML, version 4 relies on the JSON format, which makes processing in web applications and mobile apps much easier.
Advantage | V4 | V2 (obsolete) |
---|---|---|
Standardization | Latest Specification, OASIS-Standard | Older standard, less actively developed |
clavisOptimo – simulate the best use of space within the packaging | Further features (Batching, Annotations, etc.) | Limited |
Performance | Better payloads, less overhead | Partially inefficient |
Interoperability | Better for cloud and hybrid architectures | Less suitable for modern architecture |
SAP assistance | Primary in RAP & CAP | Legacy approaches (e.g. SEGW, BOPF) |
